Supply relief arrives in 2027, contract prices are still climbing this quarter, and every month you wait costs you roughly the discount you were hoping to find.

The Crucial P510 at NT$4,750 per terabyte is the drive I would buy with my own money

It reads 11,000 MB/s and writes 9,500 MB/s, which saturates any Gen5 game load you will realistically throw at it, and it comes from Micron's own fab so you know exactly whose flash you bought. The trade you accept is the HMB design, which borrows system RAM for its mapping table, so very long sequential writes settle down to native flash speed once the SLC cache fills. For a boot drive, a game library, or a photo archive, that ceiling never gets touched. Spend the NT$11,000 you saved against an SN8100 on something you will actually notice.

Buy from the company that owns the fab, because there are only five or six of them

Samsung, SK hynix with Solidigm, Kioxia, Micron, and YMTC produce essentially all of the world's NAND wafers, and more than fifty brands sell drives built from that output. Four of those producers put their own name on retail drives, and those are the four I rank at the top: Crucial is Micron, EXCERIA is Kioxia, ZhiTai is YMTC, and Samsung is Samsung. Buying from the fab owner gives you a traceable flash source, a published revision history, and a warranty backed by the company that made the cells. It also explains the price spread on this page, because a brand that buys wafers on the open market in 2026 is paying the same contract prices that doubled in six months, then adding its own margin on top.

The Samsung 990 PRO with a heatsink costs NT$3,000 less than the bare one, and I checked it three times

Coolpc lists the bare 2TB 990 PRO at NT$16,999 and the heatsink version at NT$13,999 this morning. Same controller, same V-NAND, same 7,450 MB/s rating, and the one with more metal on it is cheaper. This happens because the two SKUs draw on separate import batches with separate landed costs, and in a market moving this fast nobody bothers to reconcile them. It is worth checking on every drive you shortlist, because the SKU-level spread inside a single model is now wide enough to change which drive is the better buy. Grab the heatsink version, pull the heatsink off if your motherboard already has one, and keep the NT$3,000.

Waiting for prices to fall is the one strategy that reliably loses money this year

Phison has told the market that 2026 output is committed and that pricing pressure extends through 2027. TrendForce has NAND contract prices up another 10 to 15 percent this quarter. New fab capacity is scheduled for late 2027 at the earliest. Put those three together and the expected value of waiting six months is negative: you pay more, and you spend six months on the drive you already have. If you need storage, buy the capacity you need today at the best price per terabyte you can find, and make it a single 2TB drive, because on this page 2TB is consistently the cheaper tier per terabyte.
